I found this to be very insightful for a real amateur. But when going from recovery to catch phase, what was meant by extending to 170 deg elbow flexion? That threw me, because elbows don’t flex to 170. They sometimes extend to 190 in hyperextension. I take it you meant 170 shoulder flexion. I’m not sure my shoulders would go another 10 degrees if I wanted to.

Many times, being a champion doesn’t mean to has a great tecnique, being a champion means to has a lot of things. Obviously, there is not just one perfect tecnique, some tips maybe different,e.g. A.Popov & I.Thorpe…Anyway, I’m agree with cianwash: when you swim your head shouldn’t be facing down, not just to avoid to crash against a pedal boat or the swimming pool wall, but it’s usefull to keep a good streamline position…But we have2remeber that swimming in the sea is different from pool…

exactly – I’m hoping you aren’t swimming in an environment that you are completely oblivious too.

That’s why there are markings on the bottom of a swimming pool, so you have an estimate as to how far away from the wall you are.

tilt your head just enough to see where you are going of course lol

  6. cianwash Says:

how should you know if you aren’t going to hit something if you are not looking forward?

  7. Tharrild Says:

Yes you do, otherwise you aren’t doing the stroke properly and you are making it incredibly uncomfortable for yourself.

Did you read the description? “Six-Time Ironman Champion…” I’m sure Dave Scott knows what he is talking about.
